More commonly known by the hook line, “I want my MTV,” which is sung by guest vocalist Sting on the record, “Money for Nothing” is easily one of the most caustic records to make the Top Ten in the 1980s. Smashing all of the trappings of rock & roll stardom in one song, it’s one of Mark Knopfler’s finest lyrical moments. Musically, the gritty, fingerpicked electric guitar riff comes off sounding not unlike a distorted electric piano. This may be tip of the hat to Small Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan, who achieved similar sonic moments with that group back in the 1960s. Whatever the inspiration, it’s one of the best and catchiest hooks to open up and carry a song during this period.
